2010 State Priorities

Support Income Support in the Disability Lifeline!

The House passed the Security Lifeline Act, a bill that fully funds and renames GAU, calling it the Disability Lifeline program.  The budget that the Senate has passed eliminates the cash assistance grant of $339/month, substituting a $50/month stipend and providing housing services.  The Senate budget also limits medical benefits to 12 months in any 24 month period. Unfortunately, because of the severe shortage of low-income housing units available, GAU recipients may not be able to find housing, leaving them with just $50/month. Cutting GAU will simply transfer costs to other parts of the system such as emergency rooms, homeless shelters and jails. This is not acceptable and does not serve the most vulnerable in our communities!

Restore $100 Million to the Housing Trust Fund!

The Housing Trust Fund is the State’s largest and most effective tool to build affordable housing.  Last year the Housing Trust Fund was cut by 50% from $200 million to $100 million.  This means that many low income housing projects will not be built in the coming year unless new funds are added. Please urge your legislators to restore $100 million to the Housing Trust Fund to bring jobs and affordable housing to our communities and help end homelessness in our state.
